Provisional Licence

To get your provisional driving licence you must meet the following criteria-

  • Be at least 15 years and 9 months old.
  • Read a number plate from 20 metres away.
  • Have a valid UK biometric passport or provide an identity document.
  • Provide the addresses of where you have lived over the last 3 years.
  • Pay £34 by Visa, Electron, Maestro, Mastercard or Delta debit.
  • Have your national insurance number if known.

A provisional driving licence for car, moped or motorcycle can be applied for online. You will need to register for a gateway ID as part of your application.

 

Driving Lessons

You can learn to drive a car as soon as your turn 17. If you want to drive a motorcycle or moped, you can start to learn at 16.

If you get or have applied for the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) you can drive a car when your 16.

 

Booking a theory test

You can apply through the government gateway and need your-

  • UK driving licence number
  • Email address- if you don’t have one you have to book by phone
  • Credit or debit card

The theory test will cost £23 for cars if booking through GOV.UK. Unofficial websites will charge more.

Booking a practical driving test

You can apply through the government gateway and need your-

  • UK driving licence number
  • Credit or debit card
  • Driving instructors personal reference number to check they are available

It is possible to check for earlier appointments after you have booked. These are known as cancellation appointments. The service is available from 6am to 11:40pm. The practical driving test will cost £62.
